PMS and Energy cycles
Last time we learned about signs of a healthy menstrual cycle and exactly what PMS is. This time we will look at the energetic factors and the connection to the moon cycle.
“How might it have been different for you if, on your first menstrual day, your mother had given you a bouquet of flowers and taken you to lunch, and then the two of you had gone to meet your father at the jeweler, where your ears were pierced, and your father bought you your first pair of earrings, and then you went with a few of your friends and your mother’s friends to get your first lip coloring: and then you went,
for the very first time,
to the Women’s lodge,
the wisdom of women?
How might your life be different?”
Judith Duerk, Circle of Stones
We have the power to reclaim our wisdom of our cycles by tuning in and celebrating them. The hormones that ebb and flow throughout the cycle can bring us into deeper connection with ourselves. It is a basic earthly cycle. It connects us to our creativity and inspiration.
Each phase of the menstrual cycle has a different energy. Often times these phases also coincide with the phases of the moon cycles. It’s no mistake that we call it our ‘moon cycle’.
The first phase of the cycle is the follicular phase. At this stage follical stimulating hormone is triggering a growth in eggs. As the eggs are developing this is also a time of growth and inspiration for us. This is a time of increased creativity, developing new ideas, and starting projects.
The middle of the cycle, ovulation, the release of the egg, can be seen as the peak of the cycle. It connects with a peak of mental and emotional creativity. This is the light of the full moon, shining bright in our lives.
The two weeks following ovulation are called the luteal phase. This is signaled by the thickening of the endometrium, preparing for a pregnancy should one occur. This is a time of increasing reflection and looking inward. It’s a good time for routines and following schedules.
Menstruation brings a release, it is a time of the dark moon. Quiet, reflective and peaceful. It is also the time of renewal, starting the cycle over.
If you experience any amount of PMS one of the first ways you can reconnect to your cycle is to ask yourself what you crave most during this time. When you are at the height of your symptoms give yourself the time to reflect about what you might be needing. A day off to read a book on the couch? An evening out with your girlfriends full of laughter and fun? A hot bubble bath with a cup of tea or glass of wine? What is it that you are most deeply wishing for? Give yourself the time, you deserve to take care of yourself the same way you would take care of your kid or your best friend.
Take some time to observe your energy and moods throughout your cycle. Honour yourself.
